Some of Us

(c) Noukka Signe August 2014
They tell us we’re all in this together.

But some of us will stay home.
Some of us will be stranded far from home.
And some of us will learn for the first time where home really is.

Some of us will realize we can’t bear to go back to our jobs.
Some of us will realize we can’t bear to come home to our partners.
Some of us will fall in love.
Some of us will realize we aren’t as in love as we thought we were.

Some of us will write poems.
Some of us will paint landscapes
And make pencil sketches of our dog
And remember that we wanted to go to art school.

Some of us will learn how to play Beatles songs on our guitars.
Three notes make a chord.
Some of us will learn to knit.
Knit, purl, knit, purl makes a scarf.

Some of us will learn to cook.
Some of us will learn to pray.
Some of us will lose faith.
Some of us will gain perspective.

Some of us will put our trust in God.
Some of us will put our trust in science.
Some of us will lose our trust altogether.

Some of us will find our voices.
Some of us will lose our nerve.
Some of us will finally get the rest we need.

Some of us will plant gardens,
Tomatoes and Brussels sprouts,
Morning glory and basil.
Some of us will fill bird feeders every morning
With black oil sunflower seeds
Because it’s spring
And the robins are laying their eggs.

Some of us will discover that we’re helpers.
Some of us will discover the courage to ask for help.
Some of us will believe we’re immortal.
Some of us will have that belief tested.

Some of us will learn that we’re strong.
Some of us will learn that we’re not as strong as we thought we were.
Some of us will learn that we’re fragile.
Some of us will learn that we’re not as fragile as we thought we were.

Some of us will worry way too much about toilet paper
Some of us will worry way too much about everything.
Some of us will not worry enough.

They tell us we’re all in this together.

But some of us will live.
And some of us will die.
